Building a digital archive
The search for specific content within masses of stored videotape once required a visit to the archive librarian, a great deal of patience, and some luck. Even if one was able to explain successfully the footage you needed, and if the librarian proved able to locate that content, there remained the possibility that tape degradation or generational loss had undermined the quality and usability of once-valuable images.

Testing mixed signals
It is fitting that a lot of the avid readers of this article are broadcast manufacturers flying over the Atlantic to NAB in Las Vegas so I have a captive audience to influence with an open invitation to come and visit us in the North Hall N5015. Whereas the new product range has been designed for applications in traditional settings such as engineering bays, OBs and Studios, some of the unique attributes of the PHABRIX Rx range on show at NAB are very much targeted toward broadcast manufacturers. Hence the appeal I hope to the passengers attempting to drink the flight dry once again.

Eye to Eye: Video over IP
Live video streaming via Internet Protocol is perhaps most familiar in the form of Skypes free-of-charge online videophone service. Skype is a very easy way for an on-location broadcaster to get a video contribution back to base. A safer and more conventional technique, as with a reporter-to-anchor interview, is to live-stream video via ones own IP encoder straight into the studio for immediate viewing over a terrestrial and/or satellite network. If time is not so critical, the story can simply be emailed as a file straight out of the reporters camcorder.

It is tempting to think of digital television as something very scientific and even complex. But when we view the end result, we find something very familiar; something television engineers have sought since the very beginning¦an experience that just keeps getting better and better¦quality video and audio conveying great entertainment, sport, movies, and news to the viewing audience. The only thing new in digital television is the way the message gets from here to there.
