Delivering in all conditions with a Petrol Bags raincover
Autumn in the Czech Republic is damp and foggy, and the higher the altitude, the more piercing and rainy the climate becomes. At an old, remote mill 40 km (25 miles) away from Prague, sludge and mud are everywhere while moisture penetrates the bones. These are the filming conditions on the main set of the psychological thriller Cold Sunday.

Following the Ravensbourne 3: Ruth Matos manages her time
During the past three months at university I was extremely busy with my projects, and unfortunately had to give up a lot of outside opportunities that came along. As I am in the third year of my course I had to give priority to my university projects. Nevertheless I had a hectic schedule and had to be good at managing my time.

Live production for multi-platform delivery
Live event television, whether it is sport or music and entertainment, has always made serious demands of production technology. At Megahertz Broadcast Systems we have been building outside broadcast trucks for some of the worlds most demanding customers, for more than 25 years, so we can perhaps help the conversation by talking about some of our experiences.

Dick Hobbs looks at intellectual property rights

Alex Fine: Following the Ravensbourne 3
A lot of young people studying film production such as myself are always looking to set up as a film production company. We do little jobs where we make studio diaries for young (or old on the rare occasion) musicians; low budget music videos, [very] short films about nothing in particular, or corporate videos with clich© dolly- moves and scratchy sound.

What you see is what you get? Doubtful!
The colour you see is not necessarily the same colour experienced by someone else looking at the same thing. It all depends on the viewer and the viewing conditions as well as the actual colour of the thing. People involved in broadcast, video editing and movie colour grading are probably unlikely to have been subjected to a compulsory Ishihara colour vision test.

Ask the experts: What lens?
When choosing the right lens for your project, there are a huge range of options to choose from that depend entirely on your individual project and your needs. You need to think about the quality of filming you require, where the content will be placed, what camera you will be using to shoot it and how you plan to store it before being able to make a sensible choice. And with the emergence of 4K technology and the possibility of publishing content online, the range of choices becomes even greater. Where on earth do you start?

Gekko Kelvin Tile LED REVIEW
I like LED lighting. I know there are a lot of people who tell us that it can't produce the wide colour gamut of Tungsten, and I agree. But it’s getting close and the shear ease at which you can set them up and control their brightness, not to mention the lack of heat and the ability to run them for hours off a battery for me out ways the possible colour issues.

Bob Pank busts the cloud!

Too may of us can remember the Eyjafjallajokull volcano incident that stopped thousands of Europeans travelling back from NAB 2010. After a long show in the desert many were looking forward to home, real beer and green green grass. But the transport system that had always worked so well was out of commission, and suddenly it was clear that nothing could be done except keeping in touch with the airline, and hoping.

The Autoue Motion Pro camera stabiliser

The Autocue Motion Pro camera stabiliser is a brilliant piece of kit for getting high movement shots whilst also maintaining the ability to pan/tilt with ease. It is light compared to similar functioning stabilisers however prolonged use will quickly tire out your arm due to the manner in which you hold it with one hand at almost arms length but that said, it’s far less tiring than similar steadicams such as a Glidecam.

Twas the issue before Christmas;
As its nearly Christmas, I figured, what better way to honor the end of anther year than to celebrate everything that has gone before? To do that, Ive picked my favourite production technology innovations of 2012. But, as were fast approaching the festive season, Ive compiled them in the form a Christmas shopping list. Yes, I know. Its genius. Why has no one ever thought of this before? They have? Oh well. Its too late now. Hopefully, there should be something here for everyone in your extended family (assuming your extended family is either ensconced in the television industry or extremely weird).

Pushing remote broadcast boundaries
Film and TV coverage as varied as the London 2012 Olympics and the BBCs Springwatch are raising the bar where viewer expectations are concerned. Bradley Engineering (BradEng) is a remote camera technology pioneer that has been at the forefront of meeting these expectations. TV Bay spoke to Bradley Engineering founder, David Bradley, about the latest additions to the companys portfolio and how they respond to remote camera technology trends. We go that extra mile, he explained. For instance, upgrading the camera but keeping the existing, durable housing means we can support our longstanding customers with up-to-date kit they know will last and last regardless of what they throw at it. Most recently weve been proud that our cameras have been used for coverage of Springwatch, the Queens Jubilee, the Olympic torch relay and the Games themselves.

Are you out on the range
The main parameters to worry about in any stereoscopic scene are the most negative and positive disparity values. These numbers are usually expressed in percentage terms rather than in actual screen pixels. The distance between the numbers is the depth range. The depth budget is the maximum value this range can be allowed without being too uncomfortable for the viewer.

Eye to Eye: Video over IP
Live video streaming via Internet Protocol is perhaps most familiar in the form of Skypes free-of-charge online videophone service. Skype is a very easy way for an on-location broadcaster to get a video contribution back to base. A safer and more conventional technique, as with a reporter-to-anchor interview, is to live-stream video via ones own IP encoder straight into the studio for immediate viewing over a terrestrial and/or satellite network. If time is not so critical, the story can simply be emailed as a file straight out of the reporters camcorder.

BVE 2012 reflected these very accurately, notably the ongoing transition to file-based content capture and the growing interest in compact cameras. A good way to identify hot new products at any trade event is to identify which stands are attracting the biggest flock of visitors. Lets look at some of the key BVE crowd-pullers.

Taking the pain out of collaborative editing
Broadcast and post-production companies face the daily challenge of delivering more for less both in terms of time and money. Whilst the industry has been quick to embrace the efficiencies of file-based workflows and enhancements in the creative editing process, the reality - for companies of all sizes - is that the effective and secure management of media data remains complex and expensive.

Eye to Eye: Whats new in lighting
The majority of modern digital video cameras and D-SLRs are capable of delivering high-quality images provided the lighting conditions are good. Attempting to shoot in low light introduces the risk of noise and limited depth of field. Whatever the claimed camera sensitivity, good lighting is as essential today as ever. The following is a short overview of video lighting products introduced in the past 12 months. It reads a bit like a fast-food menu. If you get bored with all the LED stuff, feel free to skip to the concluding paragraph.

Real-Time Frame Rate Conversion in a Tapeless Workflow
When content moved within facilities and around the world on tape or via live feeds, frame rate and format conversions were easily achieved using real-time hardware converters such as Snell's Alchemist Ph.C-HD. As broadcasters and content owners moved to more convenient tapeless workflows, which enabled them to lower their costs, save time and improve logistics, the frame rate conversion step remained a baseband island within the file-based processing flow.
