The joy of field editing

In the world of remote working, cloud storage and instant news, the ability to edit on location at a shoot has become a pre-requisite. Only a few years ago, field editing used to be merely about the quick rough cut, the assembly of proxy files or simply the ingest of media in an edit-friendly format. These days, however, energy efficient, high performance processors allow for the complete post production process on a laptop. Now, programme turnaround times can be slashed with editorial decisions made on the spot.

Closed Captioning Comes to IP and Mobile TV
As mobile or IP-based TV becomes increasingly popular with viewers, so will the demand for closed captioning for the deaf or hard of hearing. Lawmakers are already flexing their muscles regarding this issue, with the U.S. federal government enacting regulations making it mandatory for broadcasters to supply closed captioning for IP and mobile programming. It will not be long before European legislators devise similar regulations. Broadcasters who arent prepared when these regulations become law may find themselves facing fines and other penalties. To avoid this, it helps to understand the basics of implementing closed captioning for mobile and IP-based television.

Operating at the cellular level
The live coverage of outside broadcast events, news or sports has always been an expensive and logistically cumbersome business. The need to invest millions of pounds in specialist satellite trucks can take years to recoup, putting the ability to service live sports contracts beyond the economy of a very few suppliers. Even the live presentation of single camera from field-to-studio typically requires an uplink to satellite, which necessitates booking costly transponder space in usually limited windows.
