Studio Technologies responds to typical booth visitor questions at NAB and IBC
By: Gordon Kapes, president, Studio Technologies
Studio Technologies, the manufacturer of tailored, high-performance video, audio and fiber optic products for the professional audio and broadcast markets, has been building equipment to address the production needs of broadcast professionals for over 30 years. The following is a compilation of questions posed by visitors to the Studio Technologies booth at major trade shows.
Test and Measurement. Shudder. Like Health and Safety, Bus and Replacement Service or Keith and Orville its a collocation of words that fills me with dread. Seriously, who wants to read about Test and Measurement? Well, as it turns out, the answer is: quite a lot of people. Because, despite its lack of glamour, it is hugely important.
The march of technological advances in fiber optic cable, along with a new generation of plug-and-play connectors, is allowing camera operators and Outside Broadcast (OB) van engineers the luxury of easy and reliable deployment of remote production equipment.
With the increase in bandwidth requirements for signal distribution systems, which infrastructure provides greater benefits copper or fibre? Can you explain why?
A notable aspect of the 2010 IBC and 2011 NAB conference sessions was the rapidly increasing focus on IP streaming. Fibre-optic delivery to the home has yet to be turned into widespread reality but transport speeds over existing electrical infrastructure continue to accelerate.
ATG Broadcast recently completed a major SD to HD upgrade for Arqiva broadcast transmission centre at Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire. The expanded system enables Arqiva to process and transmit four fully-operational 1080i HD channels as well as six new SD channels. It includes the installation and equipping of a server-based ingest suite, playout assembly facilities and four presentation desks.
Digital, server-based systems in production, post-production, news gathering and playout bring increased efficiencies and productivity. Nonlinear editing and news gathering allow users to access the same material across a data network. Digits are here and are now dictating the form of cables and connectors, from camera through to playout.
Distribution and Delivery are two elements of in the broadcast chainthat get taken pretty much for granted but both are highly important. My focus in this summary is on equipment and software introduced since IBC 2009 and in the run-up to NAB 2010.
In these economically straitened times, all broadcast facilities are seeking ways to reduce cost without compromising quality. Equally, those equipment manufacturers that want to stay ahead of the game are responding by looking at how customers work and then seeing if there is a way to deliver the same results more simply and cost effectively.
Gearhouse Broadcast was awarded the contract to supply broadcast equipment and some crew for Granada Productions I Celebrity Get Me Out of Here in 2008. Since that time we have been involved in two UK shows and one German show in Australia plus a USA show in Costa Rica.
In light of the unfavourable economic outlook broadcasters need to protect their investment in technology like never before. There is a high chance that some products designed to make the broadcast environment more efficient will become obsolete and this in turn will have a knock-on and negative effect on workflow in transmission suite
Although there were some discoveries in the late 19th century that were related to light and its propagation though a medium, it was not until the latter half of the 20th century when technological breakthroughs occurred which has led to modern day fibre optics.
Out of the Ashes of the old Anglian TV studios EPIC has risen like a phoenix to become not only a major broadcasting hub in Norfolk but to rival traditional studios throughout Europe.
