Ask the experts: What lens?
When choosing the right lens for your project, there are a huge range of options to choose from that depend entirely on your individual project and your needs. You need to think about the quality of filming you require, where the content will be placed, what camera you will be using to shoot it and how you plan to store it before being able to make a sensible choice. And with the emergence of 4K technology and the possibility of publishing content online, the range of choices becomes even greater. Where on earth do you start?

Test and measurement in digital television
Lets be clear about this. Test and measurement tools are not there to make life difficult for you, they are there to ensure that we get the best quality pictures and sound through the long path to the home within a required technical specification. So yes, simply put, checking that we are getting the best out of the technology that black is black, white is white, and colours can be reproduced accurately within the tolerances broadcasters set is vital.

Location Sound Recording And Post-production with Chris Watson
Ask The Experts Sound is often regarded as playing a subordinate role to visuals in film, TV and video production, but the finest directors and producers have insisted on taking as much care over the sonics of a production as the visuals. Of course, on smaller-scale productions, it's still often the case that the soundtrack is whatever you capture while youre busy recording the visuals, plus any incidental music you can afford to put over the top.

Lighting series
So far in this series, I have stressed some of my own preferences for good portrait lighting; using Fresnel lamps for key lights to enable accurate barn dooring, minimum spill light and an even field of light. Open faced lamps, whilst cheaper, do not give the same control of light, they give rise to double shadows and are also prone to bubble failure if jolted whilst hot.

Why choose a broadcast or professional monitor
Just as its unlikely that anyone would purchase a family vehicle to set trailblazing records around a race track and a sports car is not going to be the best choice for off-road use, the same principle is true of monitors the key is to match the product to the demands of the task.

SRW-5800 Training
Hi Dave, how was the course? This is the sort of greeting you come to expect from fellow engineers when you have recently attended a training course. Engineers are notorious for having no small talk, probably because our minds are usually concerned with things like volts, amps and ohms¦ and why that VTR always works on the bench, but fails as soon as it is put into service.

Lighting. Back or rim light part 4
In my last article, I discussed modelling of the talent by choice of lamp, and careful choice of the horizontal and vertical angle of the key light. Having made those choices my next priority would be to choose a back light. It is also sometimes known as a hair light which gives a pretty good clue as to its function.
