TV Everywhere has become a way of life in the Nordic market, where every major broadcaster has succeeded in taking its services over the top and into the online video space. One of those broadcasters pan-Nordic pay-TV channel provider C More Entertainment has offered Web TV services for years through its online video portal.
Outside broadcast, satellite uplink and product design specialist SIS LIVE has deployed its new 1.8m vehicle mounted antenna DriveForce. DriveForce delivering high bandwidth transmissions with the ability to transmit at any location including those where exceptionally windy conditions prevail.
The BNC was probably widely accepted into the broadcast television industry because of its locking feature made possible by the bayonet lugs on the female connector. Also the connectors relatively small size.
Over The Top (OTT) video revenue is set to double to $15.1 billion in 2016, up from $7.8 billion in 2012. The number of connectable devices is growing rapidly; in fact, according to Idate, the installed base of connectable TV devices will more than triple by 2016.
On February 11, Catholics all over the world were stunned when Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation an event that is unprecedented in modern history. In response, global news organizations went into scramble mode to secure budget and deploy resources to cover one of the highest-profile breaking news stories of 2013.
There is no better crowd puller at a trade show than a stand using equipment from multiple manufacturers being used in way it will be once unpacked by the customer.
SIS LIVE recently put together a working group to explore the technology and workflows required to deliver live, 4K, multi-camera event coverage from an outside broadcast unit, which culminated in a field test at St James Park on 2nd February.
Live event television, whether it is sport or music and entertainment, has always made serious demands of production technology. At Megahertz Broadcast Systems we have been building outside broadcast trucks for some of the worlds most demanding customers, for more than 25 years, so we can perhaps help the conversation by talking about some of our experiences.
In Europe outside broadcast has traditionally been within the reach of a handful of deep-pocketed television companies. With the advent of Local TV and low-cost fast turnaround production in the UK, has the time finally arrived for affordable OB?
As I had suspected a busy, new term has been presented to me. All of a sudden, I can't quite believe my three years at University will be over in a matter of months. It only feels like yesterday that I arrived feeling terribly nervous and so full of hope and expectations.
The colour you see is not necessarily the same colour experienced by someone else looking at the same thing. It all depends on the viewer and the viewing conditions as well as the actual colour of the thing. People involved in broadcast, video editing and movie colour grading are probably unlikely to have been subjected to a compulsory Ishihara colour vision test.
I like LED lighting. I know there are a lot of people who tell us that it can't produce the wide colour gamut of Tungsten, and I agree. But it’s getting close and the shear ease at which you can set them up and control their brightness, not to mention the lack of heat and the ability to run them for hours off a battery for me out ways the possible colour issues.
A couple of months ago I used this column to talk about geeks and nerds. Our industry depends upon them, whether we like it or not. Re-reading the article, I was struck by the fact that I quoted four people in the article (five if you count Christian Louboutin). All were male. According to a recent survey just 17% of the people in the technology sector of our business are female, a proportion which, remarkably, is falling.
Endorsed by twenty five thousand Facebook fans, six industry awards and thousands of new users through the trial download and active forum communities, Autodesk, Inc.,announced that the new Autodesk Smoke 2013, professional video editing software is now shipping.

So pre-NAB we are all very busy organising interviews with 70 exhibitors over 4 days covering 4 halls and in our case around 28 miles. Late last year we developed an online interview booking system at www.broadcastshow.com which allows exhibitors to book one or more 15 minute slots, enter stand information and questions they may like asked during the interview. Over the month preceding the show the fill up and we are left with a spreadsheet of who to see and when to see them. Thankfully the slot booker is intelligent enough to know which days we will be in which halls so dashing is kept to a minimum.
There is no such thing as an off the shelf solution where broadcast managed services are concerned.
Here Michael Ward, Head of Operations at WRN Broadcast, who provide playout channels for such as NHK, MTV, VH1 and East Africas Zuku platform, breaks down a few key requirements to meeting the exacting standards of international content delivery.
In an uncertain World with constantly changing demands and technical formats it is very difficult to plan and build a large facility that will be absolutely fit for purpose when it is finished. This was especially true of the BBC when it considered the needs of New Broadcasting House.
As fuel prices around the world hit a record high, every driver is looking for ways to squeeze as many miles as possible from every precious gallon or litre. If you are a broadcaster with a fleet of Outside Broadcast vehicles, how do you stop fuel overheads from rocketing and eating in to your hard earned profits?
There are two issues that affect the potential growth of 3D in broadcasting: they are the widespread availability of 3D enabled devices, and the cost of producing and broadcasting 3D content. All HD TV sets from major manufacturers over 40 inches that are sold today include 3D capability, so the end-user market of 3D capable viewers is growing by default. 3D is not even a remarkable selling point any more for the latest TVs: if you take the Samsung Smart TV as an example, this is marketed as a connected TV - the 3D capability is advertised with just a small label on the box. So there is a growing potential market of viewers for 3D content providers.
Given that almost every television receiver sold today is capable of displaying full 1920 by 1080 pixel images, broadcasters around the globe are accelerating their investment in high-definition (HD) channels.
It may or may not have become apparent that I love my tech. I use it, write about it, podcast about it. In fact I think I might even start shaking and suffering from mild withdrawal symptoms if I don't have a least one item of tech near me.
For those of you who don't know (and obviously only read tv-bay for my column) IBC is the world's second largest broadcast convention, held in Amsterdam. As previously mentioned in last months' column, I went with tv-bay.
The best kind of intercom system is one that works so well that it only takes a button or two to push when communication is required. Because of how quality intercom systems simplify communication, it is one of the broadcast industrys most undervalued technologies.
The live coverage of outside broadcast events, news or sports has always been an expensive and logistically cumbersome business. The need to invest millions of pounds in specialist satellite trucks can take years to recoup, putting the ability to service live sports contracts beyond the economy of a very few suppliers. Even the live presentation of single camera from field-to-studio typically requires an uplink to satellite, which necessitates booking costly transponder space in usually limited windows.
We are all clear that there is a great deal of momentum in pay television at the moment. Alongside that driver, though, there are others which are dramatically changing the way consumers watch television. These include the desire to watch programmes at a time of their choice not that of the broadcaster (and in the room of their choice), and the use of other devices laptops, smartphones, tablets at the same time as watching television.
BVE 2011 had much of the buoyancy and buzz of an IBC. The organisers claimed an attendance of over 15,500 visitors and 240 exhibiting companies. Many of the UK-based stalwarts who make the annual pilgrimage to Amsterdam could be seen exploring the show, confirming that BVE is now taken seriously by mainstream broadcasters.
Murraypro recently received a request from Manchester's Granada Studio Complex to borrow a Test Chest 3G for an evaluation they wished to undertake. While Murraypro were delighted to lend them a demonstration unit for their technical testing, they had no concept of any of the background story developing at the TV Centre. The expression content factory has been around for a while and in a number of contexts. Is this a realistic concept? Can we producers, facilities, broadcasters embrace the idea of process in the manufacturing sense, or is making content for television and the new digital platforms too different to making biscuits or cars?
A week into Wimbledon and my chances of getting there this year seemed to be dwindling fast. A late call on Friday afternoon though from Timeline TV rekindled my hopes of not only seeing a bit of tennis but getting an exclusive tour around the Wimbledon Broadcast Centre.
The traditional CRT monitor stack is now all but consigned to the annals of history. Not the vain claim of some clever marketing agency or the opening pitch of a sharp dressed sales rep but more the demise of a technology that is becoming less and less available. While manufacturers still have a few CRT models available in their portfolio weve seen them becoming less and less as the market has moved to different technologies.

Cameras and camcorders are shrinking at such a rapid rate that a lot of today's established support devices are looking completely out of scale. In some aisles of the NAB 2010 Central Hall, visitors were at perpetual risk of colliding with excited demonstrators nipping hither and yon with hand-held stabilisers for DSLRs. Most were only for single camera 2D but watch out for the 3D redesign at IBC in September or at NAB 2011.
Distribution and Delivery are two elements of in the broadcast chainthat get taken pretty much for granted but both are highly important. My focus in this summary is on equipment and software introduced since IBC 2009 and in the run-up to NAB 2010.
This alphabetical overview of new video and film post-production kit at IBC 2009 was going to start with Apple but the company pulled out of both NAB and IBC in 2008
Just as its unlikely that anyone would purchase a family vehicle to set trailblazing records around a race track and a sports car is not going to be the best choice for off-road use, the same principle is true of monitors the key is to match the product to the demands of the task.
There was a rapid change in image display technology within the last few years. Nowadays CRTs are history, flatpanels substitute them everywhere. Even in the broadcast industry.
The monitoring of multiple video sources has been simplified and costs greatly reduced by the use of multiviewers. These make use of two principle technologies: large high-resolution video screens and the real-time resizing of video.
In light of the unfavourable economic outlook broadcasters need to protect their investment in technology like never before. There is a high chance that some products designed to make the broadcast environment more efficient will become obsolete and this in turn will have a knock-on and negative effect on workflow in transmission suite
Hi Dave, how was the course? This is the sort of greeting you come to expect from fellow engineers when you have recently attended a training course. Engineers are notorious for having no small talk, probably because our minds are usually concerned with things like volts, amps and ohms¦ and why that VTR always works on the bench, but fails as soon as it is put into service.
This month we visited independent service company, Broadcast Service Centre Ltd (BSC), specialising in providing top quality technical support for a wide range of equipment within the Broadcast and Pro video industry.
